Shhh,
The streets aren't talking,
People aren't walking,
Silence everywhere,
Covid is stalking,
People are in fear,
Too much pain to bare,
Two metres apart,
The masks are now here,
On the planes,
In the trains,
Public spaces,
Will never be the same again!

Loneliness can be loudest in silence,
And silent in the rowdiest of crowds,
It’s something we dare not say,
A feeling we cannot shake,
An invisible mask, so tightly wound,
We deem impossible to replace,
A fortress built from within, it stands,
Guarding the heart from cold unseen hands,
Words of judgement that leave us distraught,
Said or unsaid. They haunt our every thought,
But, Loneliness can be a teacher in disguise,
Showing us the other side of human ties.
To look beyond the veneer we wear,
To reach out, to listen, to care,
So when the crowd’s noise finally dies,
Look around and see who resides,
In the silent cage of isolation,
Gently Take off your mask and warmly ask,
Are you OK?

Have you noticed that I cannot speak,
This contraption conceals my speech,
The gleen of my uneven off-white teeth
My mother's chubby dimpled cheeks,
And cracked pink lips you cannot read,
This veil is suffocating, but I only lower it to breathe,
My voice is stuck in a box somewhere trying to scream,
Freedom of speech, urgh, that’s an utopian dream,
A social driven illusion,
That keeps me a dumb regurgitating machine,
Speak never, smile forever,
And simply agree to agree,
So I cause no offence and need no defence,
To be complicit in this artificial society.
